It’s also home to a couple of Yanks (my parents), and all of my memories. It’s home to stomping around in the marsh with my brother and playing two-hand touch on 100 degree days. Eventually, I found another home in Seattle at the University of Washington, a school that first rejected me and then couldn’t get rid of me. I squeezed everything I could out of the Law, Societies &amp; Justice and Creative Writing programs where I sprinted from short story workshops to The Daily newsroom to lectures on criminal justice reform. I took opportunities to venture outside of my comfort zone at every step including reshaping music coverage at the student newspaper, attending classes with inmates at the Monroe Correctional Complex, and living with an eccentric couple while writing poetry on the outskirts of London. I took pictures of it all. I podcasted about it all. I wrote about it all in stories and tankas and scribbles in my Moleskines. In one of my final classes at UW, I learned about the exponentially growing plight of climate refugees, a cause that inspired me to seek out graduate programs where I could deepen my understanding of this topic. I landed in the University of Edinburgh’s Environment and Development program. There I learned about the greatest international development and environmental justice challenges facing the planet. I worked with incredible academics, attended COP 26, and completed a dissertation analyzing the methods that Costa Rica and the United States utilize to incorporate migrants into their healthcare systems. I was humbly awarded with the distinction of “Best Overall Contribution” to the program. Since moving to D.C., I have continued to expand my storytelling skills and apply my energy towards giving immigrants and refugees a bigger platform. This has included serving as a storytelling and podcast volunteer with KAMA DC, a grassroots organization dedicated to highlighting the skills and stories of immigrants and refugees living in the DMV area. Days here get stuck in the mud and are only nodded forward by the breeze. No one ages except from small town tragedies and slipping into big city dreams. The only clocks are box crabs who click their forefingers once at dusk and twice at dawn and who scatter at the shuffle of adventurous feet. I find a lot of things at home. 80’s phosphorescent tennis shirts, dirt under my toenails, and an old tune that a bluebird once taught me ringing between my ears. For a week it tells me to stay, it tells me to wake up and climb old war bunkers before the horizon is smeared purple and peach. After that week, I lose the melody, I sleep in, I set out. Savannah I didn’t hear your motor cutting the current tonight, only your breeze stripping the moss of dusk’s fading pink warmth. The end of October reminds me of burnt knees and long sleeves in front of the fireplace. The end of October reminds me that one day I’ll bring someone new home. You’ll be jealous, crimson. I’ll smell the witch hazel on her hands as my fingers connect the dots between the kisses your sand gnats left on her swollen ankle. Walking the blocks between dusk and dark I steal looks inside of illuminated townhouses and see what people hold important enough to hang against vanilla stucco: mahogany framed expressionist paintings, succulents individually shelved and reasonably spaced, string lights that slouch like afternoon shoulders, and the neatly threaded tapestry that Terrence sent from Kyoto that was almost hung in the room where we sit around each other and take small sips of warm drinks and long gazes out of tall windows as indiscernible faces stroll past on nights like these when it only drizzles and raindrops rest on car roofs like beads glue gunned to linoleum, and I step outside to smell damp maples and angel’s trumpets and almost brush shoulders with a quickly-passing figure, faintly familiar, scoring the streets for a new still, a frozen scene, architectural and intimate inspiration, a loose thought. An Essay on Meeting Your Heroes Trying to interpret the loaded Irishman in the sticky American Bar just North of the Hammersmith Bridge was like being put in one of those game show money booths that blows an endless stream of dollar bills in a million different directions, you have to grab on to any words that you can. Cathal. Yea I grew up next to Shamey ya know? Same primary school, swear to fookin God. Top lad, he’s got a little brother with some sort-a mental disability or sometin, always looked after him. Top fookin lad. Captain Fantastic. As a football fan, there are certain things you expect from your leader, high work rate, small ego, a physical embodiment of the club, ‘The People’s Club’. Seamus Coleman is not a swaggering centre back or outspoken midfielder like many of the others who don the captain’s armband. Seamus Coleman is a soft-spoken, baby-faced right back. He’s not gifted with the blistering speed or a rocket right boot (although his net-ripping missile against Southampton in 2013 would suggest otherwise), but there is a quiet tenacity behind those probing and curious eyes. Who else plays a full 90 minutes in their first game back after a near year long hiatus due to a grisly double leg-break (which Seamus didn’t even flinch at)? Seamus Coleman. Easter Sunday. Two weeks after meeting Cathal, I stood face to face with pilgrimage. To me, a pilgrimage has to be made on foot, so I rose early and fueled-up, Full-Monty, and weaved my way from downtown Liverpool through streets of middle-class red-brick homes and fake Georgian townhouses lined with wrought iron until I reached my Wailing Wall, Goodison Park. I watched both buses unload, Richarlison, Bernard, Sigurdsson. Pogba, Rashford, Martial. I took swigs on pints of Fosters in old pubs stuffed with priceless memorabilia and working class men who looked as if they had been bald their entire lives. I waddled through the turnstiles mere minutes before kickoff. I almost fell over when Richarlison flipped his big left boot over his head and thrashed the ball goalward, and we held our breath and sang and put our arms around each other’s shoulders for 90 minutes. Everton 4 - Manchester United 0. I was dreaming. Exit one was barricades and little boys in royal blue jerseys. Exit one was preferred by the star players, the goal scorers, the starting keeper. I stood by exit two, the quieter exit, no barricades, light security. They came out one at a time, humble defenders and back-ups and assistant managers and there he was: Captain Fantastic. I was a sunflower in a sea of delphinium hoping that my vintage mustard away jersey would attract my target. Seamus, Seamus, can I get a picture real quick? I didn’t care so much about the picture. I barely got my face and blonde ‘fro in the frame. I just wanted him to put his arm around me (which he did). Today was my first match at Goodison. I appreciate such a great performance. It’s an escape from the dizzying architectural arrangements that line Norrebro’s long streets. Assistens Cemetery. There lies precise hedges and Hans Christian Anderson. Across the street, past the craft wine bar There is another cemetery, a smaller cemetery, a Jewish cemetery. Things are less precise, it is crumbling red brick and tilted dirt trails uprooted and overgrown and middle-class flats splattered with block-lettered graffiti. There lies David. B. Adler who I have no relation to. It’s a still from a horror movie, blazes of light filtered through branches reflecting off of the bending grass and dandelions. These seats are not for me, not for tourists who stumble into the cemetery after a long day on their feet. I can sit anywhere and watch the sun tuck behind the hills that flank the Southwest edge of the city. The chairs wait to be filled with cigarette smoke and fragmented conversation by one of the families whose ancestors lie 300 yards east, one of the families that lives a couple of blocks away, in a cream-colored house, with amethyst wisteria growing over the clothesline in the backyard. https://gabeadler.com/Pandemic-Poets Wed, 17 Jun 2020 22:05:21 +0000 Gabriel Adler https://gabeadler.com/Pandemic-Poets Pandemic Poets This is a project that I was invited to join by the Pandemic Poets page on instagram. I wrote poems based off of prompts given to me by my friends in exchange for donations to the International Rescue Committee. We raised over $150 dollars, and that money was matched by my family and a second donation was made to Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking. Some of the poems that I wrote for this project have been posted to this page. On the Beach We will tip-toe charcoal smoked, ivory and bumblebee splattered, royal blue lawn chair beaches with scattered joint butts and discarded peach pits, until we find our spot and shed our leather-strapped shoes. There is security in being at sea-level, in having nowhere to fall and in looking into a distance and knowingthat if a piece of the Olympics were to crack and crash to the floor, it would land at your feet and settle in the seafoam. And when I twist a third Blue Moon open, I will forget about the orange slices in the cooler. I will be watching sand explode like miniature land mines under the feet of my friends, young men with echoing voices and athletic builds. Young men that I missed during the inside war. Uncoil In the quiet light of late hours, when days were dim, harsh, and closed, we laid in blanket wombs and walked under concrete towers, we layered our wounds against the long wind and made abbreviated eye contact. We who share shape and track how many minutes later the sun will set tomorrow, that sun that seals some scars in bronze, like the one on the side of my cheek that will be swallowed by a laugh, when we begin sharing those again. And how often do we get to reset, relearn our favorite tricks, shed skin like an old jacket, uncoil, and crane like a California poppy seeing the coast for the first time. Morning I delay sleep until my chain makes impressions on both my pillow and neck, and I slide it over my ears, kiss it, and lay it next to my crimson water cup, so that it is there for me when I wake up to kiss it slide it over my ears, feel its weight on my sternum next to where my heart strikes out the early morning song, on beat with the whistling sparrow balanced atop the magnolia, but absorbed by the T.V. in the kitchen. It is hard to live in fear at breakfast when everything bad is stuck in yesterday, when you’ve survived the six o’clock news and a mid-slumber sweat. What is there to be afraid of when the yard is still and there are fresh blueberries in the fridge? Matzah Brei There is a recipe that, I like to think, has been in my family for generations. I think this because no one in my family has ever grabbed a spatula with conviction in their palm. This recipe is for cooks of all skill levels. First, you crack half a dozen eggs into a large bowl and stir. Then you grab a shit-ton of matzah, and it crumbles in between your fingers onto the counter as you transport it as quickly as possible and slide a sheepish smile in your mother’s direction. You then break the thick, aerated sheets of cracker into the bowl (the pieces of matzah should vary in shape and size for best results). After you add a few splashes of milk (any kind will do, but I do not think that they had almond milk four generations ago), and a dash of salt and pepper, and stir it all together, you’re ready to cook. Fire up the largest pan you can find to medium heat and melt some butter. Throw all of the matzah brei mix in there, stomachs are grumbling and siblings are kvetching. You’re basically just making scrambled eggs at this point, except for the fact that your matzah brei will be bathed in syrup and coated in cinnamon sugar before being consumed. “Moses didn’t liberate us for you to disrespect the bread of affliction with this sugary, sacrilegious breakfast dish,” a man with a beard fuller than mine might suggest. And I would respond, “Look around. We are no longer the people with our noses in the dirt. Still, there are many who split sea and border, who do much more with far less, for their children to be reclining at breakfast, like I am now. Look at how much food we have made: enough for guests, in the hope that more will be able to join us next year. To snap the bread of affliction and remember how cruel life can be, and to drown in syrup and remember how sweet life can be.” Phantom Limb Pain I think it was my eighth birthday that I celebrated with a cookie-cake and Velcro-clad relatives Retirement County, Florida, counting (great) Uncle Bob’s fingers. He had lost one to a shell in WWII. There is a phenomenon called phantom limb pain during which someone who has just lost a part feels painful/burning/twisting/itching sensations in their missing extremity, and I wonder if Bob could feel the absent digit try to wiggle free as I passed it by for the fourth time. Probably not. You adjust a middle finger assumes the assignments of a pointer like commanding a trigger or poking your partner's side just before the monster jumps out. The following year, Groove 206 was born. On Groove 206, Gabe interviewed everyone from college house show heroes to touring artists, and through the podcast, Gabe received media passes to shoot backstage at one of Seattle’s biggest festivals and even took a mini road trip with one of Israel’s hottest rock bands. After creative differences impelled Gabe to remove Groove 206 from the paper’s platform, he became the sole producer and editor of the show and taught himself the ins and outs of audio-editing and podcast publication. A few months into the Covid-19 pandemic, Gabe’s football (soccer) obsessed friends approached him with a new podcast idea. After much discussion and preparation, the group of five released the first episode of The Meat Pies Podcast, a Premier League and international football focused podcast. Guests have included everyone from famed pub owners and friends to MLS club owners, World Cup stars, and Olympic heroes. Through the Meat Pies Podcast, Gabe has continued to expand his production and editing skills including recently implementing the unique “hat-trick” interview format, a Meat Pies original concept where the hosts construct an interview around the three most important football matches the guest has ever watched, attended, coached, or played in. The crowds and quick turnaround after shows can make it difficult to connect with artists on showdays, so I selfishly try to take my chances beforehand. I introduced myself, and he said with a smile that he was expecting me. I felt bad; I had accidentally started a small train of concert-goers that recognized him outside of the venue. We spoke briefly as I stood in a line of a couple dozen fans. I mentioned my music podcast to him and moments later the long line behind me gasped as James Bay gave Kevin a goodbye hug and brushed past. As a student journalist and the most active contributing writer for the Arts Section of The Daily at UW, I was tasked with creating the first music show for the fledgling Podcast Section. I learned some really important lessons, the main being that the worst someone can do is say no. I did some really cool stuff including interview Kevin before a show on his tour with Banks. This was the biggest interview that I had done at the time. I was nervous. I might’ve been late. I asked some decent questions and some really stupid ones. I made him do a segment called “Kevin Garrett or Kevin Garnett” where I read him a collection of his own song lyrics and quotes from former NBA superstar Kevin Garnett, quizzing him on who said what. While initially reserved, Kevin was incredibly gracious and courteous and charming. We spent over an hour together, chatting loads before and after the interview. He told me about all of the one-off guitars in his new favorite music store by Pike Place and his desire to go to a Mariners game next time he was in town. The Showbox SoDo, where he’d be playing later that evening, sat in the shadow of T-Mobile Park. He even gave me his cell number at the end. None of this extraneous conversation was recorded of course; you remember these things when meeting one of your favorite artists. None of anything we said that day was recorded at all actually, even what was supposed to be a 30-minute podcast. I was so jittery and amateurish that I never did a soundcheck. Kevin’s soft voice competed with the coffee shop’s background music, and my cheap microphone was confused into impotence. The audio was irrecoverable. For years, I never reached back out to Kevin or his PR team. While I learned from the experience, I remained somewhat embarrassed. When I finally had the chance to see him again after five years, I jumped at the opportunity for redemption. I connected with his team and asked to photograph the show. He has been recognized as a collaborator by the likes of Lennon Stella, Banks, and the Queen Bey herself. While the podcast is gone, there is one quote from Kevin while discussing his creative habits that will stick with me forever: “I write for myself. I make music for others.” As a young writer constantly contending with the value of my piled pocket-notebooks filled with scribbles and untethered thoughts, this simple statement felt incredibly profound. Once you’re a writer, it’s nearly impossible to shut off. There’s no use in fighting it, but it can be difficult distinguishing between writing to lift the heavy words from your conscience and writing to connect with others. <img width="724" height="1084" width_o="724" height_o="1084" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/37426629bfc3a919a85ac28aae6adb6480dcd9796d444b3fff7f6ce6f7fadc52/E709BE20-4B1E-4D8E-8B31-8F61B9D0053A_1_105_c.jpeg" data-mid="225349788" border="0" data-scale="44" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/724/i/37426629bfc3a919a85ac28aae6adb6480dcd9796d444b3fff7f6ce6f7fadc52/E709BE20-4B1E-4D8E-8B31-8F61B9D0053A_1_105_c.jpeg" /> It’s funny and a bit strange hearing Kevin on stage talk about criticisms he received from songwriting professors in college as he tunes for "It Don't Bother Me At All” or “Coloring.” His ability to bake layers of vulnerability into addictive melodies is second to none. It makes it apparent that this is Kevin’s calling, and it is hard to imagine a music industry that he doesn’t fit into. Yet, like many artists, Kevin has expressed frustrations with the challenges of the industry. Countless talented artists struggle to navigate relations with record labels and predatory streaming services. While there are more ways to market your music than ever before, monetizing it can be a different story. I imagine that Kevin has run into many of these hurdles, but I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have people like Kevin in music. He is one of the most relatable, accessible, and genuine artists in the game. There are few that take more time to interact with their fans, and he consistently brings refreshing transparency to the stage. In a world, and especially a music industry, that is played out largely online, his willingness to connect in person with those that care about his work is irreplaceable. It is a simple concept: when you see others openly embracing their calling, it makes it easier to pursue your own. Kevin makes music more human and concerts more pleasant. I’m at the end here, and I haven’t even mentioned his voice, which is one of the best I’ve heard live. I will go see Kevin perform every time I get the chance, and I will always be grateful for our nonexistent podcast and the grace he’s shown over the years. The Los Angeles native brought the West Coast vibes to an East Coast institution last Wednesday night as the Birchmere brimmed with energy and barbeque. It felt only fitting to see a modern giant in a setting that comes heavy handed with jazz, rock, and blues history. With the release of The Epic in 2015, Washington garnered international acclaim for his cinematic sound and virtuosic solos, but this current iteration of the Kamasi Washington experience has a much different feel almost a decade on. While Washington and his band still built a massive sound, there was a lightness about the performance that accentuated the massive solos. Washington has embraced his role as a leader in West Coast music through the collective West Coast Get Down. One of the highlights of the show for me was the space given to hip-hop legend DJ Battlecat, who spun incredible mixes throughout the evening. The heavy hip-hop moments were balanced with soothing vocals from Patrice Quinn and soulful keys from Brandon Coleman. Washington’s tenor sax still sealed most songs perfectly, but the show was less a showcase of his talents and more a carefully curated tour of the West Coast jazz scene.
